- •Out-of-Square Buildings: If building corners are out of square by more than 1 inch, panels will skew and require wide rake trim covers.
- •Thermal Movement: Long steel or aluminum panel runs (>35 ft) expand up to 3/8" in heat and require expansion clips.
- •Gage Thickness: 24-gage steel panels are standard for commercial/residential standing seam; 29-gage is common for low-cost agricultural barns.
Practical Roofing Information & Contractor Guidelines
- Order Full-Length Continuous Panels: Avoid horizontal panel overlaps wherever possible by ordering custom cut-to-length panels directly from the roll-former.
- High-Temperature Underlayment is Critical: Metal panels reach temperatures up to 160°F–180°F in summer. Standard organic felt will degrade; always use high-temp synthetic peel-and-stick underlayment.
- Thermal Expansion Allowance: Aluminum and steel expand and contract with temperature shifts. Standing seam expansion clips allow movement without stressing fasteners.
- Dissimilar Metals Corrosion: Never use galvanized steel screws in copper or aluminum roofing, as galvanic reactions will rapidly corrode the metal.
- Eave Hem & Drip Edge: Standing seam panels must be notched and hemmed around the continuous starter cleat at the eave to prevent wind uplift.
