Building Code Rule:

In snow/ice climate zones, the International Residential Code (IRC R905.1.2) mandates ice barrier underlayment from eaves up to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line.

Synthetic Underlayment Coverage

A 10-square roll of synthetic underlayment provides 1,000 gross sq ft. With standard 4-inch horizontal overlaps and 6-inch end laps, effective coverage is ~900 sq ft.

Ice & Water Shield Barrier

Self-adhering modified bitumen membrane (36" wide × 65 ft long = approx. 195 sq ft). Standard cold climate building code mandates coverage 24" past the interior warm wall.

Accuracy Standards & Operational Limitations

RoofCalc uses exact trigonometric, geometric, and industry material standards (ASTM, IRC). However, real-world site conditions introduce variations that estimators should account for.

  • Calculations assume true geometric planes; structural sagging, warped framing, or uneven deck swelling can increase actual material requirements.
  • Ground-level measurements miss chimney crickets, dormer sidewall flashing overlaps, skylight curb flashing, and hip/valley waste factor variations.
  • Waste allowances (10% simple gable, 15% hip/valley) are industry estimates. Complex roofs with multiple dormers or turrets may require 18% to 22% waste.
  • Material bundle packaging (33.3 sq ft per bundle) means quantities are rounded UP to full bundles to avoid jobsite shortages.

Practical Roofing Information & Contractor Guidelines

  • Install drip edge directly against the wood decking at the eaves (under the ice & water shield), but on TOP of the underlayment along the gable rakes.
  • Always install an Ice & Water shield membrane down the center of all valleys before overlapping the field underlayment.
  • Never substitute regular nails for plastic cap nails when securing synthetic underlayment; cap nails prevent water blow-by during storms.
  • Inspect plumbing vent pipe flashings (boots); always replace old cracked rubber collars with new heavy-duty all-weather silicone or metal boots during a reroof.
