Common rafter geometry relies on right-triangle trigonometry. To get accurate framing cuts, you must deduct half the thickness of the ridge board and calculate both theoretical line length and tail overhang.

Worked Example: 24ft Building Span with 6:12 Pitch & 1.5" Ridge

Framing a gable roof on a 24-foot wide building (288 inches span) with a 6:12 roof pitch, a 1.5-inch 2x8 ridge board, and a 12-inch eave overhang.
