Rafter Framing Carpentry Formulas & Trigonometry
Common rafter geometry relies on right-triangle trigonometry. To get accurate framing cuts, you must deduct half the thickness of the ridge board and calculate both theoretical line length and tail overhang.
Half the building span minus half the thickness of the ridge board (e.g. 0.75" deduction for a 1.5" 2x ridge).
The hypotenuse distance along the rafter line from the plumb cut at the ridge to the plumb line above the exterior wall plate.
The plumb cut angle for the ridge and fascia cuts, and the level horizontal seat cut angle for the bird's mouth.
Tip-to-tip overall lumber board length including the eave overhang projection.

Practical Roofing Information & Contractor Guidelines
- Maximum Bird's Mouth Depth Rule: According to IRC Section R802.7.1, the vertical notch (heel cut) for a bird's mouth bearing seat must never exceed 1/3 of the rafter board depth.
- Full Bearing on Top Plate: Ensure the horizontal seat cut provides at least 1.5 inches of solid bearing on wooden top plates (or 3 inches on concrete/masonry).
- Ridge Board Depth: The ridge board must be at least as deep as the cut end of the rafter (e.g. use a 2x8 ridge board for 2x6 rafters; a 2x10 ridge for 2x8 rafters).
- Crown Your Lumber: Always crown lumber before cutting and install rafters with the crown (bowed edge) facing upward towards the sky.
- Collar Ties and Rafter Ties: Collar ties in the upper third prevent ridge separation during wind uplift; rafter ties (or ceiling joists) in the lower third prevent walls from spreading outward.
